Pints and patios: Avoid a skunked beer

The final months of summer are here and warm days are numbered. Before you head back inside to the bar, enjoy the opportunity to relax with a beer on our sunny patio.

However, the combination of summer rays and cold beer doesn’t always mix. There’s a chance your brew could get “skunked” but don’t let that stop you from drinking outdoors!

So what’s the cause of this skunk flavor? A chemical reaction involving hop bitter acids, sulphur compounds and vitamins results when your beer meets light. Luckily, the taste doesn’t bother everyone. But the next time you sip on our patio, you can play it safe in a few different ways.

“Skunking” doesn’t occur with brown glass bottles or canned beers. Clear bottles and green glass bottles attract the stench, but some large commercial beers with clear bottles have been modified with hop extracts to avoid this problem.

If you choose to enjoy a draft beer instead, sit in the shade to protect your drink. You can also try a less hoppy beer too, which won’t succumb to the sunlight as easily. We recommend a refreshing pint of Watermelon Gose the next time you visit the patio! It’s a perfect way to relax in the last of the summer sun.
